About

As a Data Network Engineer and I’ve helped to build and maintain efficient secure compliant highly available data networks that allow businesses to focus on their primary function without having to worry about the backend.

I’ve helped in the design and build process for networks belonging to global aerospace and insurance companies as well as government entities for the past 20 or so years.

I’ve been working in telecoms since the mid 80s and have covered every part of the network from the exchange to the customer premises. I’ve been involved with exchange builds, telephony business systems and datacentre builds.

I’ve spent the last 10 years configuring network routers, switches load balancers and firewalls, so I know networks fairly well by now, although it’s always progressing and in constant flux, the basic principles remain the same.

I hope to bring that experience to help within the SOHO arena by looking at the options available at the lower end of the market, as well as the free tools and open source offerings that can be used to keep costs down, and blogging about it here.

When I’m not busy working, I’ll be fixing the house, keeping the garden under control, working on my old Alfa Romeo, playing the guitar, or enjoying a coffee somewhere. I also like to cycle and ski but haven’t managed either of those things for a while.
